Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called for calm and continued improvement after the Reds began their Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside after the match, Van Dijk admitted that the game was always expected to be difficult. Liverpool fell behind early but responded strongly to secure all three points.
The Dutch defender was pleased with the team’s reaction after conceding, saying the victory would provide a major confidence boost. However, he stressed that Liverpool still have plenty to improve as they adapt to manager Arne Slot’s demands.
“Winning breeds confidence but we all need to be calm, recover and focus on the things we have to improve,” Van Dijk said.
He added that Liverpool are still in a development process and that more matches and training sessions will be needed before the team reaches its full potential.
Van Dijk also praised Bradley Barcola following his full debut, noting that the youngster performed well despite having limited match time recently. He urged Barcola to recover quickly and prepare for Liverpool’s next fixture.
