Lionel Messi ended his 21-year international career with a memorable performance as Argentina defeated Benin 3–0 in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old captain set up goals for Nicolas Otamendi and Nico Paz before scoring Argentina’s third goal from the penalty spot. The result gave Messi a fitting farewell in front of an emotional home crowd.

Messi finishes his Argentina career as the country’s most-capped player, with 208 appearances, and record scorer with 126 goals. He also helped Argentina win the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles during his international career.
After the match, Messi thanked the fans and reflected on the honour of representing Argentina for more than 20 years. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni also praised Messi’s remarkable contribution to the national team.
Although Messi has retired from international football, he will continue his club career with Inter Miami.
