The British Army has clarified the rules for Nigerians and other Commonwealth citizens who want to join the UK military.

Nigerians are eligible to apply because Nigeria is a Commonwealth country. However, the British Army says its application window for Commonwealth residents is currently closed, except for people applying as musicians. The Army has not announced when applications will fully reopen.
The UK Ministry of Defence said Commonwealth citizens remain an important part of the Armed Forces, with more than 5,500 Commonwealth personnel serving in the UK Regular Armed Forces as of October 2025.
Applicants must meet the Army’s recruitment, security and immigration requirements. Those invited to the selection process must have valid permission to be in the UK. Successful recruits become exempt from UK immigration control while serving in the Regular Army.
The Army said the current closure of Commonwealth applications followed an unusually high number of applications in 2024. The situation is being reviewed, but there is currently no confirmed date for when applications will reopen
