Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has condemned the disruption of Peter Obi’s visit to Benue, describing the blockade of the presidential candidate’s convoy as wrong and against democratic principles.

Obi’s convoy was reportedly stopped by suspected political thugs in Makurdi on Tuesday while he was on his way to Yelwata, where more than 200 residents were killed in an attack in June 2025. The incident forced the convoy to turn back.

Ortom accused Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration of being involved in the incident and called for respect for the rule of law. He stressed that Obi should have been allowed to visit the state to sympathise with affected communities.

The Benue State Government has denied any involvement, saying it had no knowledge of the action against Obi. Meanwhile, the state police command said 46 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The development has raised fresh concerns about political tension and respect for democratic rights as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 general elections.
