The Imo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other federal agencies to combat money laundering and other financial crimes in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, stated this in Owerri while receiving an EFCC delegation conducting the 2026 Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) Risk Assessment Field Exercise on Money Laundering.

Iwu, who received the delegation on behalf of Governor Hope Uzodimma, said strong cooperation between state and federal institutions was essential for protecting public resources, improving financial accountability and strengthening good governance.

He particularly welcomed the EFCC’s assessment of non-profit organisations, noting that such organisations could be vulnerable to abuse for money laundering and terrorism financing. He assured the commission that the state government would continue to provide the necessary support for federal agencies operating in Imo.

The SSG also highlighted reforms introduced by the Uzodimma administration to improve financial management and reduce leakages in the state’s public finances. He said the government had addressed irregularities previously identified in the preparation of workers’ salary vouchers, which he said had caused significant monthly losses.

The EFCC team, led by Mrs Korede Abdul-Aziz, is in Imo as part of the nationwide exercise aimed at identifying risks within the non-profit sector and strengthening measures against financial crimes.

The engagement reinforces the need for continued cooperation between government institutions to promote transparency, accountability and the protection of public resources.
